Fort information for the First and Second Lines

15/11/2017

There are now pages for every fort on the first and second lines.

See Here: Districts and Forts on the Lines

Over the next few weeks I will add information on the third and fourth lines.

How many forts?

14/11/2017

The answer you usually get is 152.  I have been looking at them as I create pages for each fort and there are actually around 170 individual fortifications.  The majority of the difference is Forts 1 and 5 which are actually made up of 13 separate fortifications. Then there are some mysteries , like Forts, 116, 117 and 119, which have more than one fortification but the exact number is not clear.  Watch this space.......

Damage at Fort 42 - Forte da Portela Pequeno

9/11/2017

Significant damage is being caused by motorcycles.  These are some of the most visited forts and need to be protected. Photos: Mark Crathorne, British Historical Society of Portugal

Information on Forts

8/11/2017

I am adding further details.  There are now pages on eighty of the forts.  Work is continuing with the aim of having information on every fort by the end of 2017.

New plaques on Monument at Alhandra

6/11/2017

New plaques have recently been recently to the Memorial to the Lines at Alhandra to replace those stolen.  The Friends of the Lines will be paying for these. Hopefully the modern design will not attract further theft or damage.
